Designer Pudsey bear, BBC Children in NeedWhat is Children in Need? A one-off TV fundraiser? Or something that lasts through the year? For the uninitiated, Children in Need is much more than a few hours on the TV schedule: it’s a charity run by the BBC which helps disadvantaged children in the UK.

The grants they receive allow them to provide help for children and young people.

You can read some of the children’s stories and how they have benefited by clicking on the relevant UK regions on the BBC’s website.

When is Children in Need?

The BBC hold an appeal night every November. This year’s show is on this Friday at 7:30pm on BBC1. The show is a whole evening of fun entertainment. Lots of celebs get involved, and there’s even some one-off specials from popular TV programmes like Doctor Who and Eastenders. Here’s a little taster for you – The Muppets, from Children in Need 2011:

Fundraising ideas

In the months building up to the appeal night there’s loads of crazy fundraising events which get organised, all across the country. From having a bath full of baked beans to organising a dress up day for the local nursery, the community in York got stuck in last year.

This year so far there’s been the designer Pudseys being auctioned off, The One Show’s Rickshaw challenge, Pudsey’s annual auction on Ebay plus lots of other events in your local areas!
